Deputy Jailer Michaela Elizabeth Smith, who passed away in 2019, was remembered by two organizations at a ceremony at the Murray County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.
Smith’s parents, Michael and Annette Smith, were on hand on Monday when her name was added to the Georgia Law Enforcement Memorial Wall and by the End of Watch: Ride to Remember, a mobile exhibit which travels the country recognizing law enforcement personnel who died while on active duty in 2019.
Annette Smith praised the efforts of both organizations, as well as the Murray County Sheriff’s Department, which was represented on Monday by Sheriff Gary Langford and numerous officers who served with Michaela Smith.
“The sheriff’s office has been so good to us through all of this,” said Annette Smith, who also recalled her daughter’s love of toasted marshmallows, swimming and family time.
“I have learned that the length of a life has nothing to do with the impact that life made,” Annette Smith said.
The 26-year-old jailer died on July 3, 2019. Her death was ruled an accident in November by a medical examiner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
