Mr. Kirby Patterson


Mr. Kirby Patterson, 82, of Chatsworth, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at Parkridge Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia and Miley Patterson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorene and Raymond Keener and Leona and LD Brooks; brothers, Billy and J.L. Patterson; son, Todd Patterson; brother-in-law, Bentley Willis. 

Survivors include his loving wife, Sherrie Patterson; daughter, Terri Kirby; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Melissa Patterson; grandsons, Todd and Keri Kirby, Taylor and Shai Patterson; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Baylor and Londyn Patterson; sister, Myrtle Willis; brother and sister-in-law, A.J. and Eloise Patterson; extended family also survives.

Kirby was a native of Murray County and spent his entire adult life devoted to public service. His career started as Deputy Sheriff, even though he was too young to carry a gun. He then rose to the position of Chief Deputy before his career led him to becoming the Chief of Police for the city of Chatsworth. Following the Chief position, he was elected in 1968 as sole Commissioner of Murray County in which he proudly served for 20 years. Throughout those years, many county developments such as new industries and new and improved roads works were all completed. During this time, he was a founding member and chair of the North Georgia Planning and Development Commission which brought industry and development to all Northwest Georgia. Kirby finished his career serving as Police Chief of Chatsworth before retiring and was a lifetime member of Georgia Association Chiefs of Police.

Kirby always loved his family, friends, Murray County, our beautiful mountains, and the people. He succeeded in every endeavor that he was a part of. He will truly be missed.

Graveside services to celebrate the life of Mr. Kirby Patterson were held Sunday, December 20, 2020, from Fairy Valley Cemetery at 3 p.m. with Rev. Tony Patterson and Rev. Byron Flanders officiating.

Flowers were accepted or donations may be made to Chatsworth First United Methodist Church at 111 W Cherokee Street, Chatsworth, Georgia 30705.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, social distancing and masks were encouraged. No food or beverages were allowed in the funeral home.
