Barbara Gail Hickey

Barbara Gail Hickey, age 74, of Chatsworth, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at AdventHealth Gordon.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Hammontree; mother, Jessie Hammontree; brother, Lynn Hammontree; and husband, Robert “Bootsy” Hickey.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Brian and Denise Hickey and Richard Clay Hickey – all of Chatsworth; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Joel Bailey of Chatsworth; brothers and sister-in-law, Danny Hammontree of Chatsworth and Ralph White, Jr. and Agnes Hammontree of Kentucky; sisters, Kathy Leopard of Chatsworth, Kay Pharr of Chatsworth, and Cheryl Hammontree of Dalton; grandchildren, Nicole, Daniel, Sara, and Ryan; great-grandchildren (too many to mention but close to her heart); nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Graveside services for Mrs. Hickey will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Cool Springs Cemetery with Rev. Stone Southers officiating.

The family will receive friends at Peeples Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday morning before departing for the cemetery.

Mrs. Shirley Wanda Hughes

Mrs. Shirley Wanda Hughes, age 72, of Crandall, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Hospice of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Melvin Hughes; parents, William Shaffer Swanson and Estella Earley Swanson;  sisters, Wilma Tucker, Louise Towel, Ruby Kimsey, Marie Prince; brothers, Bud and Ray Swanson;

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda & Tony Johnson of Crandall, Sherry & Rex Jones of Crandall, and Tracey & Larry Crawley of Chatsworth;  sisters-in-law, Cookie Swanson Stiles of Gastonia, NC, Loucrecia Hughes of Copperhill, TN, Carzella Voyles of Jasper, GA and Arlene Beason, LaFayette, GA; brother-in-law, Lamar Eller of Jasper, GA; grandchildren, Kimberly Johnson, Bobby Johnson, Dennis Johnson, Mason Crawley, and Mitchell Crawley; great-grandchildren, Jay Ridley, Carter Langford and one on the way Charles Levi Johnson; nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hughes were held Friday, January 10, 2020, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with Rev. Shane “Booger” Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Fairy Valley Cemetery.

Shirl Plank

Shirl Plank, age 83, of Chatsworth, Georgia, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2019. She was born on April 13, 1936.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Plank; son, Christopher Clemmons; brothers, William Buddy Crisp, Bucky Crisp, Carl Crisp; sister, Patricia Russell; granddaughter, Tiffany Smith; and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Donna Fletcher of Chatsworth, Jeffrey and his wife Leissa Clemmons of Pembroke, GA, Lori and her husband Randy Stark of Chatsworth; sister and brother in law, Rena and Kelly White of Inglewood, TN; brother in law, Everett Russell of Chatsworth; grandchildren, Candace Miller, Jessie Ann Hitt, Jeffrey Clemmons, Keefer Clemmons, Kerstin Clemmons, Destinee Castillo, Seth Castillo, Blaine Stark; and several great grandchildren.

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Shirl Plank will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at the chapel of Dalton Funeral Home. Interment will be at Center Valley Cemetery.

Nancy Ruth Keener Stafford

Nancy Ruth Keener Stafford went to be with her Lord Sunday, December 22, 2019.  She is the daughter of Beatrice and Rose Keener.  Mrs. Stafford was greatly loved by all of her family.  We take great comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her husband, Willie Stafford, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, David E. Stafford; son and daughter in law, Darran and Cathy Stafford; daughter, Diana K. Stafford Callihan; grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, Joshua (Emma) Lyles, Samantha (Hunter) Kivstad, Erin and Sarah Callihan and David A. Stafford. Also surviving one brother and sister in law, Leonard and Liz Keener.

Funeral services for Mrs. Stafford were held Thursday, December 26, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Pastor Carson Scarbrough officiating.  Interment was in Fairy Valley Cemetery.  The family received friends on Thursday, beginning at 12:00 noon.

Mrs. Lucy Pullen Mantooth

Mrs. Lucy Pullen Mantooth went to be with the Lord Monday, December 23, 2019 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She went on to join some of her friends and relatives who have preceded her.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Melvin and Vallie Pullen; brothers, Eugene, Floyd and Thomas Pullen; sisters, Rachel Stafford, Lorene Dunn and Magdalene Cook; sisters-in-law, Hazel Pullen and Bessie Pullen; brothers-in-law, Ralph Stafford and Barney Gallman.

Surviving loved ones include husband, Claude Robert Mantooth of Crandall; daughter and son-in-law, Linda & Brian Smith of Crandall; granddaughters, Amy and Whitney Smith; brothers and sister-in-law, Howard Pullen of Chatsworth, James and Debbie Pullen of Crandall; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Lou Gallman of Chatsworth, Minnie Ruth and Billy Ballew of Chatsworth, Ann and Jerry Flood of Chatsworth; brother-in-law, Charles Mantooth; several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Mrs. Wanda Eloise Cox, age 88, of Crandall, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 27, 2019.

She was born on September 24, 1931.

Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, Troy & Pauline Isenhower; husband of 52 years, Claude B. Cox; son, Steve Cox; granddaughter, Pamela Cox; sisters Elizabeth Gowan, Lucy Beavers & Gwen Mashburn.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Alan & Rita Cox of Cohutta, Eddie & Rose Ann Cox of Dalton, Richard Cox of Crandall and Michael Cox of Chatsworth; daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl & Bobby Martin of Old Fort, TN, and Polly Cox of Crandall; adopted daughter and special caregiver, Nancy Allen; grandchildren, Karen & John Hedden, Billy Cox, Amy & Steve McKnight, Kenny Cox, Ryan Cox, Haley & Jordan Manley, Tiffany Martin, Cody Eaves, & Cody Martin; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive; caregiver, Missy Anderson.

Tammy Michelle Berry age 48 of Chatsworth, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019.

Survivors include husband, Venancio Espitia; son, Miguel Espitia; daughter, Lydia Katelynn Espitia; parents, Kathleen and James Berry; sisters, Debbie Ramirez, Jann Worley, Tabatha Dodson; grandchildren, Nevaeh Worley, Addilynn Jane Worley and Autumn West; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Mr. Gary Carson Sitton

Mr. Gary Carson Sitton age 69 of Chatsworth, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at his residence.

Gary was the owner and operator of Gary Sitton Trucking.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey and Greathel Quarles Sitton.

Survivors include special friend, Louise Dixon of Chatsworth; brother and sister-in-law, D.F. and Faye Sitton of Chatsworth; sister, Martha West of Chatsworth; nephews, Mike Sitton (Cindy), Bruce Arnold (Lori), niece, Rhonda Cloer (Lamar); great nephew, Cody Sitton (April), great nieces, Kayli Ponders (Ryan), Whitney Wilbanks King and Shelbee Wilbanks; great-great nephew, Mason Ponders; aunts, Frances Faith, Jeanette Sitton and Thelma Sitton –all of Chatsworth; other extended family members also survives.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Sitton will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from the Holly Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Cochran and Rev. John Bagley officiating. Interment will follow in the Holly Creek Cemetery.

Carlton McDaniel

Carlton McDaniel, age 87, of Chatsworth, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 16, 2019, at his home.

Carlton proudly served his country as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean War Era in Army Intelligence. He was an active member of the Gideons International having served for 44 years. He also was a member of the Murray County Veterans and a member of the Spring Place Ruritan Club for 62 years and Friends of the Vann House, just to name a few. He and his wife Henrietta were actively involved in historic preservation of not only their home but other places within Murray and Whitfield County. He was serving as Chairman of the Hardee’s Think Tank after being appointed by Ken Wilburn. Jim Middleton has been appointed his successor in this position.

After his wife’s passing in 2013, Carlton began a scholarship at Murray County High School to honor her memory. He was responsible for helping to celebrate his community through the creation of the splash pad, and most recently a playground for Spring Place Elementary School. He also helped with the purchase of the Boys and Girls Club of Chatsworth facility and with the purchase of the Youth Facility at First Baptist Church of Chatsworth.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Henrietta McDaniel; and parents, Sam and Amy McDaniel.

He is survived by his children, Wayne McDaniel; Nancy McDaniel Shipley; Jodi and Dale Lowery; and David and Lori McDaniel; brother, Herman McDaniel; grandchildren, Heather  Foster (Adam) Ambrecht, Chris ( Lauren) Foster, Andrew McDaniel, Lauren (Bobby) Wiley, Joe McDaniel, and Emma McDaniel; great-grandchildren, Venice, Indigo, Ryan, Will, Lucas, Ross, Elise, Aedyn and Thomas Henry; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Carlton McDaniel were held 6:00 pm Sunday, November 17, 2019 from Chatsworth First Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Carr, Rev. George Ross and Tim Howard officiating. Burial was in Spring Place Cemetery.

Mr. Roger Willard Steelman, age 64, of Crandall, passed away Monday, November 11, 2019, at his residence.

He was a member of Ball Play Baptist Church in Old Fort, TN.

Mr. Steelman was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Monroe Steelman and Betty Sue Johns Steelman; son, Rodney Steelman; sister, Janice Long.

Survivors include wife, Karen Young Steelman of Crandall; son Jason Herndon of Crandall; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Carolyn Steelman of Crandall; sisters, Doris Stafford of South Pittsburg, TN, Linda Weaver of Oklahoma; brother-in-law, Charles Long of Crandall; grandchildren, Tristan, Trenton Cole, and Trey Herndon; nieces, nephews and special friends also survive.
