Mrs. Della May McColgan

Mrs. Della May McColgan, 78, of Chatsworth, GA, departed this life Friday evening, January 10, 2020, at Pruitt Healthcare in Fort Oglethorpe. Della was born March 1, 1941, in Syracuse, New York. She was the daughter of the late Harlow and Marian Wereley Guernsey. She was also preceded in death by her late husband, James Andrew McColgan, and her brother, Douglas Guernsey.

Della is survived by her daughters, Eileen (Reynaldo) Salazar Gomez of Chatsworth, GA, Ann McColgan, and Tara McColgan, son, James Douglas McColgan of Manchester, NH; grandchildren, Casey McColgan, Corey McColgan, Adriana Salazar, Leticia Salazar, Daniel (Brittany) Salazar, Reynaldo Manual Salazar; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sean and Theodore; sister, Doreen Mesick of Missouri.

Mrs. Cora Clotee Fowler

Mrs. Cora Clotee Fowler (LPN), 84, of Chatsworth, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020, at Erlanger Health Care.

Clotee was a member of Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church and spent many years as an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing with her great grandchildren, attending church, singing gospel music, gardening, shopping, and cooking.

She spent more than fifty years in the nursing industry. She loved taking care and visiting members of the community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Stella Bowen;  brothers and sisters, Verla Mae Wells, Ezra John Bowen, Mary Jane Monteen Blankenship, Rev. James Edward Bowen, Earlie Clifford Bowen, Ira Avery Bowen, Ina Sue Sanford, Louella Robbins, Anie Lee McIntosh, and Barbara Jean Mason Byrd.

Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Harold Fowler of Chatsworth; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Tessy Fowler of Chatsworth, Greg and Nancy Fowler of Cohutta; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and George Brandenburg of Chatsworth; grandchildren, Joshua and Hollie Fowler Doctors of Pharmacy of Chatsworth, Ryan and Amy Fowler of Cohutta; great grandchildren, Hayden Ansley Fowler, Harper Avery Fowler, Hudson Harold Fowler, Bo Fowler, and Gabe Fowler; extended family also survives.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Cora Clotee Fowler were held Monday, January 20, 2020, at 2 p.m. from Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Guffey, Rev. Jerry Davis, and Rev. Ryan Sanford officiating. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Effie “Earlene” Long Odell

Effie “Earlene” Long Odell, age 90, of Chatsworth, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at her home.

She was a member of God’s Lighthouse and enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens.

She was preceded in death by the father of her children, Johnny Odell; father, Richard Samuel Long; mother, Violet Woody Long; and siblings, Otis Long, Dee Long, Hardin Long, Arvil Long, Elmer Long, JP Long, Florida Duckett, Stella Vena Bishop, Bertha Long, and Verna Mays.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Gordon Lewallen, Jr., Barbara and Paul Bajkowski, and Sherry and Tim Mashburn; sons and daughters-in-law, Carson and Betty Odell, Jerry and Susan Odell, Tim and Diane Odell, and Larry and Judy Odell; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Earnest and Roberta Long; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Fred and Mary Cook.

Funeral services for Ms. Odell will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at God’s Lighthouse with Timothy Odell, Jr., Rev. Charles Wilson, and Rev. Dennis Hicks officiating. Interment will follow in the Conasauga River Baptist Church Community Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and at God’s Lighthouse on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11 a.m.

Ms. Eloise Quarles

 

Ms. Eloise Quarles, age 72, of Crandall, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020, at her residence.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Dawnville.

Ms. Quarles was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Essie Mae Lyles Quarles; sisters, Martha Sue Quarles, Sarah Ruth Quarles and Mary Lou Welch.

Survivors include husband Wayne Cartwright; sons and daughter-in-law, David and Beth Moss of Ringgold and Michael Keith of Crandall; brothers and sister-in-law, Hoyt Quarles, and Clinton, Jr. and Penny Quarles, all of Crandall; grandchildren, Hayden, Haley, Holden and Hudson Moss, all of Ringgold. She is also survived by her loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Ms. Quarles were held Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Corbin and Rev. Arthur Corbin officiating. Interment followed in the Dewberry Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Maurine Elrod Davis

Maurine Elrod Davis, age 90, of Chatsworth, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Barney Elrod and Carl Leon Davis; parents, Verlia Austin Bearden and Dororthy Cantrell Robinson; and grandparents, Henry and Etta Calhoun Cantrell and Jasper and Ida Melissa Davis Bearden.

She is survived by her son, Ragan Elrod; special family members and caregivers, Darryl Bearden and family and Janette Gibson; cousins, Sylvia Etheridge, Hilda Jones, and Elaine Huggins; special family friend, Herbert Parrott; and many other extended family members, friends and neighbors.

Memorial services to celebrate the life of Maurine Davis were held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020, from the Chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Chatsworth with Rev. Graham Arp and Rev. Daniel Valesquez officiating.

Mrs. Barbara I. Stone, age 72, of Rocky Face, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Hamilton Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Stone; parents, Marion & Emma Gossett; brother, Hubert Gossett; brothers-in-law, Robert & Buddy Stone, Don Crisp, Clyde Weaver, Jerry Tankersley, Robert Stewart, Mike Bowers; sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Stone, Donna Stone and Rachel Stewart; several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Thelma Louise Jones “Lou” Locklear

Ms. Thelma Louise Jones “Lou” Locklear, 87, of 3349 Bracken Court, Marietta, died Sunday January 12, 2020, at Roselane Nursing Home in Marietta. Ms. Locklear was born in Spring Place and spent many of her years in Chatsworth and Chattanooga, before settling in Marietta for the past few years. Lou was a faithful and proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was perhaps best known for her love of sports and, especially, the Atlanta Braves.

Ms. Locklear is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest “Dutch” and Lillian Jones of Chatsworth; niece LuAnn Green; and many aunts and uncles.

Survivors include one sister, Sue Green of Blue Ridge; children and their spouses, Bill and Bernie Locklear of Dunwoody, Jimmy and Jenny Locklear of Decatur, Debbie and Ben Buchanan of Marietta, Dr. Jody and Debbie Tudhope Locklear of Port Townsend, Wash., and one nephew, Mickey Green of Baltimore; grandchildren and spouses, Kim Locklear of Sandy Springs; Kyle and Andrew Hartman of Chamblee; Dane and Dylan Fisher of Port Townsend; Maj. Services are Friday, January 24, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Shawn Chapman Funeral Home with Jimmy Locklear officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. on Friday.

Betty Ruth Mathis

Betty Ruth Mathis, 79, of Crandall, GA, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020, after a valiant battle with lung cancer at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born November 13, 1940, in Palmer, TN to the late Elvin Franklin and Beulah Bell Robertson Smith; and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Sissom; daughter, Terisa Ruth Sissom; brothers, Elmer, Herbert, Bob, Alfred, Hal, Fred and Troy Smith; sisters, Martha Elizabeth Caldwell, Mary Catherine Burnette, Aline Hargis, Eula Mae Bess and Edna Brown.

Betty had a servant heart and was loved by so many. She was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grandma Betty. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. Betty was retired from Shaw Industries.

She is survived by her loving husband Don Mathis; sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick & Beverly Sissom of Varnell, Jerry & Karen Sissom of Cohutta, Terry & Rhonda Sissom, Trevor & Michelle Sissom of Crandall, Tracy & Melissa Mathis of Benton, TN, Jim & Lynn Mathis of Cohutta; step son Wade & Darla Mathis of Rocky Face; step daughters, Elicia Whaley, Vanessa Huggins, and Tammy Brock; grandchildren, Mikie Sissom, Tony Sissom, Lee Sissom, Eric Mathis, Matthew Sissom, Tyler Sissom, Rebecca Bullock, Hannah Hendricks, Erica Crawford, Robin Ogle, Ali Harp, Ashley Walker, Summer Mathis, Karlie Mathis, Katie Mathis, Brock Mathis, Jessica Sissom, Katelyn Griggs, Katelin Bevans, with several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brother, Samuel Smith  of Gruetli-Laager, TN and Lois Marie Lance of Dalton, GA; special nieces, Annette Reece and Linda Lock, and several loved nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Betty Ruth Mathis were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020, in the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home of Chatsworth with Pastor Ronald Guffey and Pastor Billy Webb officiating.  She was laid to rest at United Memorial Gardens.

Brandon Shawn Gibson

Brandon Shawn Gibson, age 42, of Chatsworth, passed away Monday, January 6, 2020, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Ann Weaver.

Survivors include his father, Ray Glenn Gibson of Chatsworth; brother, Micah Gibson of Chatsworth; sister and brother-in-law, Amanda and Mike Winkler of Chatsworth; and niece, Chloe Gibson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later time.

Geneva Miller Carpenter

Geneva Miller Carpenter, of Chatsworth, Georgia, passed away January 10, 2020, at Fellowship Home, Milledgeville, Georgia. She was 95 years old.

Geneva was born July 8, 1924, in Winder, Georgia, to the late Leatus (L. R.)  and Emily Miller.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her younger brother, Bonnie Miller, and beloved husband of 75 years, M. L. Carpenter.

She is survived by her sons, Kent Carpenter (Dorothy) of Milledgeville, and Marc Carpenter (Penny) of Crandall, Georgia; grandson, Kell Carpenter (Melena), and great-granddaughter Kelsey, all of Milledgeville.

Geneva graduated from Winder High School in 1941, and studied at Marsh Business College in Atlanta, Georgia.  Following a brief period of local employment in Winder, she supported the World War II effort as a Clerk Typist in the Fourth Service Command of the War Department in Atlanta.

She married M.L. on January 21, 1944.  After her husband prepared for a career as a pharmacist, they moved to Chatsworth in 1951 and established Carpenter’s Pharmacy (now Carlton’s Pharmacy).  While raising their two sons, Geneva also worked in support of the pharmacy and her husband’s other business ventures.   She was very active in their church, the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth, and by example gave witness for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Those that knew her will remember her as a good neighbor and friend.

Geneva’s gentle spirit and loving commitment were at the heart of her family, and allowed it to grow and thrive.

The family will receive visitors at Peeples Funeral Home in Chatsworth on Sunday, January 19, 2020, beginning at 1 p.m.  The funeral will follow at 3 p.m., then interment in Chatsworth Heights Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth.
